I've never been big on animating characters, but now that I have to get a few low-poly NPC's together for a project, it's super to have found the very lovely MakeHuman Python add-on for Blender. MH is an incredibly efficient and accessible means of shaping a character, all while it's still attached to the rig. MH beats what Maya offers for the design of game humanoids, in both output and ease of use.. MakeHuman uses the fancy Facial Action Coding System for disturbingly realistic expressions (D.R.E) and Additive Morphing for the bulk of mesh shaping itself.
.. MH is also free (though donations make you a more attractive person)..
