Here
is a great example of where A.R (Augmented Reality) is going (RealVideo). As applied to games it's still obvious that this all relies on a head-up display, so as long as gamers can afford to look like a fly, I guess it may be a winner.
Interestingly enough, the physical scene in the movie reminds me of the still very popular table-core games like Warhammer, perhaps there's an interesting format-crunching opportunity there.
After some experience with the ARToolkit I'm going to have a crack at what I think's going on here...so correct me if I'm wrong..
The cameras use shape recognition to determine the skew-plane of the table, so when the camera moves, everything in the scene is drawn relative to this plane.
The cameras are also used to find the edges of objects for use in the kind of occlusion happening with the car when it goes around the objects in the scene. You'd need a few cameras to do this.
Once the car is on the table (which is an invisble drawn mesh in the scene) it can then be driven around, even colliding with objects in the scene whose edges (read from three angles) have been used to approximate the volume of the form. The object the man holds in the first instance is probably a pitch/roll/yaw sensing device like that offered by mercury triggers, so the initial tip plane of the car can be derived before the world physics system takes over..
There, that's it..
