archive: Blender: Mesh-Modeling to Rendering (Introduction)
Here's a manual I wrote introducing the basics of modeling, texturing and rendering using the excellent open-source software Blender for the FLOSSManuals project. Blender isn't the sort of software you can just dive in and teach yourself so easily. It has an unusual interface but one that pays off greatly once learned. For instance, in my experience, Blender is much faster to work with - and more performant - for rapid mesh modeling than 3DSMax or Maya. Following this manual and doing the tutorials should get you well up to speed with Blender. Later on I'll post a section on the Realtime Game Engine part of Blender toward the ends of rapidly prototyping your game/3D interface ideas. About FLOSSManuals: FM, initiated by Adam Hyde, seeks to provide high-quality user-contributed and maintained technical manuals for open-source software, some of which will be published as paper books on-demand.

archive: 3D Texture Primer on Gamasutra
Gamasutra has published a great little tute/guide covering creation of 3D textures for use in games. Those of you using Gimp or other image manipulation packages should have no problem translating the same techniques from the Photoshop based examples in the tutorial. Read it here.
Thanks to Marta for the pointer!

archive: A Comprehensive Ogre3D Tutorial
Ogre3D is a popular, fast, powerful and flexible open-source 3D engine for use in 3D games.
While there are good tutes on the Ogre wiki, this comprehensive tute by Xadeck offers a good balance of general explanation, demo files and low-level coverage for those wanting a solid grounding in Ogre to the ends of creating projects that go beyond games; great for those wanting to use Ogre to create an interactive artwork or explore a new rendering technique.
Thanks to pix for the pointer.
