Mutable Interfaces

Some time ago I wrote an article about gamepad design, suggesting that the vast difference across their designs traces a long history of ergonomic experimentation - on us, the players.

Our blisters tell us there's no such thing as a stock-standard human hand, let alone the best way to use it in play. However it took the bright sparks at Redmond a few gazillion $$$ to realise that not everyone has XXL American Male hands, and so eventually 'un-supersized' their XBox pad for the rest of us.

These are expensive problems, and while I cherish the eclecticism of approaches in gamepad design, this has caught my eye as close to what might be thought of as a solution.

Albeit not a gamepad (in the conventional sense) it can be used as one. This 'Ergodex DX1' tablet allows the player to configure their keys and button events as they like, across both the hardware and a software interface; like twister there are as many combinations as your fingers can handle. It looks like you'd need an executive sized desk to accomodate the DX1, but it's applications are wide and inspiring.

TY Chad!
