Just like in a dream consisting of multiple episodes, Handke reconstructs the history of his Slovenian family in Podjuna. The intimate saga takes us back in the time before the World War II, amidst the Partisan fight that had brought a cleavage in his mother’s family between two opposite sides, as contempt of the new Austria towards the Slovenian minority had rapidly come to replace the brutality of Nazism after the war. The text intertwining dramatics with prose and intimate poetics with historical facts was inspired by personal notes together with letters, photographs and documents, found after the death of family members. Video performance for four projectors, a bicycle and a performer. The First Law of B. K. emanates directly from the first law of thermodynamics: »Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, only transformed from one state to another«. For the purpose of the performance Barbara reduces her existence to that of a thermodynamic system where she transforms food energy (calories/joules) into luminous energy – the perceived energy of light (lumens).
