Mladi Levi International Festival 2015
Ever since its birth in 1997, the Mladi Levi Festival has been drawing on the selection of aspiring young stars of performing arts together with their acclaimed colleagues to capture the zeitgeist and outline the current social atmosphere as well as the trends in contemporary production, while anticipating the themes and challenges of what is yet to come. For the last few years, namely from the very beginning of what we refer to as the crisis era, the festival has been persistently reflecting engagement, concern, solution-oriented pursuit, anxiety, utopias as well as dystopias of the participating artists… The artistic landscape has come to coincide with the experimental arena for the breakthrough tactics – looking for new solutions, utopias, alterations of the socio-political system and various tactics of economic survival. The forthcoming programme, however, emanates a new sort of courage and optimism, as if the theatre is once again returning back to the colossal themes and majestic dramas, to passion, to the characters constituting the Greek divine pantheon, to the partisan art and to the most exquisite of all mechanisms of mental distancing: humour. The engagement is still equally there, but it seems as if the artists are once again reclaiming their space to create and thus co-create a better world, to immerse in philosophy and in the profound contemplations. As if the newly emerging struggle is self-exclusion from the dynamics of rapid changes, from constant alterations, from the deafening circle of novelties and for a return to in-depth reflection and aesthetics.
Emanating from the motives of Chekhov’s Three Sisters, the opening performance by the Brazilian theatre team guided by the director Christiane Jatahy, What if they went to Moscow?, revives Chekhov’s play with the fusion of Russian and Brazilian passion. Instead of immersing in melancholia, the performance brims with prurience and lust for life. It is structured in a twofold manner, part of it takes place on stage while another group from the audience observes a film shot in real time on stage and behind it. By watching both – the performance and the film – the spectator gains insight into all layers of action.
