Energy, dance, vitality. In constant reversal, in perpetual rhythm of percussion. Rapid spotlights follow gestures and movements as they arise in the arena of the feminine and gradually transform into animalistic in their untamed and sensual expression. This is Guintche, performance by a Portuguese dancer and choreographer Marlene Monteiro Freitas, enfant terrible of the contemporary dance. Much like the late Cesaria Evora, Marlene also carries the exotic soul of Cabo Verde. While dancing, she undergoes a chameleon-like process of transformation right in front of the audience. Her mighty and proud body emanates magnetism and fascination as she moves in a furious, rhythmic and colourful manner…in hypnotic dances and rituals.

Marlene’s third choreographic piece Guintche was inspired by an image Marlene had drawn during a concert. And from then on the image started to grow, to demand, to emancipate, to resist. No longer as an extension of the mind, it rather began inhabiting dance as its expressive form.
