Leja Jurišić and Marko Mandić: TOGETHER
In the frame of Gibanica – Biennial of Slovenian Contemporary Dance Art
The performing duo Jurišić–Mandić, in collaboration with director Bojan Jablanovec and writer Semira Osmanagić, addresses the timeless ideal of performing arts and the eternally unsolvable issue of politics: what does it mean to be together, and how to be together. Marko and Leja turn this question upon themselves: why do I want to be together, how to endure being together, what to do (with oneself) so that “together” becomes a realization of a surplus (me), how to avoid the hierarchy of power. And how to establish this “together” in the performative time and space of the spectator. “Together” is a sort of a mythical site of fusion that “heals” an individual with another individual. To do this, they need time. The gaze of the third seeking its own place in togetherness, entering the performance through the thoughts of Semira Osmanagić who interprets with words and pushes the doorknobs of invisible doors into the “together”. “Together” requires an investment that is increasingly difficult to pay. “Together” is a surface which is always slippery. An unsolvable problem for politics, an eternal ideal for performing arts.
“Performance Together is an uncompromising commentary on the pace of the modern world, the pace dismantling not only ‘free’ times, but also the foundations of their respective communities.” Zala Dobovšek
Leja Jurišić is a choreographer, dancer and performer. In exceeding traditional understandings of liminal corporeality, she takes different positions of radical performative expression seemingly naturally and almost effortlessly, while simultaneously operating within the fields of dance, performance and political art. Marko Mandić is a theatre and film actor, who is considered an undisputable star in Slovenia, and promising new talent in the international arena, as confirmed by his Shooting Star award at Berlinale 2007 and by numerous awards received for his creative achievements. Bojan Jablanovec is a theatre director, founder and artistic director of the Via Negativa project. Using reduction as a working method, he is researching the relationship between the performer and the audience and focusing on the question of the real in this relationship. Semira Osmanagić is an art historian working at The Department of Culture of the City of Ljubljana. In 2015, she published her Romanesque debut entitled Three Laps Around the House. She published short stories in the magazines Apokalipsa and Literatura.
