A selection of awarded international short films on how synthetic biology, bio-art and society may come to intertwine.

Synthetic biology is a new and promising approach in the biotechnology field, which produces and re-transcribes DNA structures in order to push the functioning of microbial and animal cells closer to human needs and desires. This could allow for a production of organisms resembling electronic devices in the future, but we are at this point already confronted with the questions on the consequences of such engineering for human beings, society and the environment, which also means that the relations between science, art and society should be revisited once again.

BIO•FICTION@Ljubljana, as part of the international festival of science, art and film BIO•FICTION Vienna, brings a selection of awarded short films for the first time to the Slovenian audience. These films encompass and interpret various perspectives, dilemmas and expectations of synthetic biology and biotechnology. It is through film as a medium that this event strives to instigate reflection and public discussion on this sort of technology and its (future) place in society. The screening of short films will be followed by an interdisciplinary round-table discussion.
